2011 was such an amazing year. I’ve said it before; I feel I grow every day/ year in the vast world of Photography. In 2011, I feel I was the most true to myself and my shooting style and hope that continues in 2012. I even had a few (surprise) features I am really proud of. Both ads will be featured in the upcoming 2012 issues of the Wedding Planner and Guide as well as the Once Upon a Time Bridal Guide.

Every year I make new goals for myself whether it be business related, branding related, equipment related or for personal reasons. Last year I had one main goal, I vowed to balance my life better and learn to say no. I felt I had a much better year because of it.

My 2012 goals consist of a mixture of ideas.

# 1- Continue my life balance-I’m sticking to my guns- I will have 2 little boys and 1 big one to keep in line now! Which means less photography, keeping my sessions to a minimum, weddings to 2 a month maximum and never working on Sundays. If you want a session with my you will have to contact me 6 months in advance to be guaranteed a session this year. (I am booked into June currently) I will be doing more mini-sessions this year, I will be doing little to no traveling for sessions anymore, I shoot a lot at my own home and plan to continue that. (I do however, travel for weddings) If I am scrambling to find room for sessions or staying up till 1am editing or working every night and weekend, I don’t feel I’m giving my clients my best work or attitude. I want to give every client 100%. I realize I can’t take as many clients and do as much as I would like but in the end I feel better about delivering quality vs. quantity.

#2- Take emotions out of my business and be true to myself. Here’s a clip from an awesome article I read about pricing

“As a general observation, I am shocked at the low prices of a lot of portrait photographers – especially new photogs, and I hope this isn’t offensive to anyone, but what is more important than your photography, is your business skills when running a business. This industry is completely saturated with underpriced photographers – many talented. Think of this — the stats are something like 95% of all photography businesses fail. What makes you feel that you should be in that 5% that does not fail? Business sense, that’s what”. (MPC BLOG)

Clients will not value your work, if YOU don’t value it.

Hand in hand with that philosophy is staying true to myself. Shooting clients who understand my work and my untraditional shooting methods, clients who understand my pricing, all clients are different and want different photographs, I need to be proactive in not only attracting my target clients but also choosing them. #3- Network-Photography has become a growing industry especially it seems in my client area and I live in a small town. Networking with other photographers is really important to me. The relationships I made so far as priceless to me. They understand, they are supportive and most of all they are fun!

Krystal Muellenberg and I have teamed up to put on a workshop. What I learned from workshops I have attended was that I learn the most from other people(attendees), from talking shop and networking. Which is exactly what we hope to accomplish. We can only share our experiences and what we learned along the way. I’m excited to work with other photographers and share insight with them and gain insight in return. Lst year we did a mock wedding workshop that was a huge success! Check back for future workshops!

I also teach a photography class at Western Tech in Tomah, this class is fun for me, I can blab about photography and spill my guts to eager new photogs. I love to do it, I hope to find time to continue that class this year.

In addition to that, Something I loved to do since the very first time she asked me to second shoot with her is work with Krystal, we have similar shooting styles yet different points of view and we love to work together, so much in fact we are now taking on joint weddings, we had a few in 2011 and the end result was absolutely amazing for the clients, they get twice as many pictures, different angles, places, reactions, it’s sharing the responsibility of a wedding and supporting each other during the day. In my personal life this New Year we will be welcoming our new son, Oh I can’t wait to see him! I’m very much looking forward to having an infant again, my first child was a whopping 9’13lbs and I didn’t get much “infant” time with him, when he was 3 months old he looked like a 6 month old, so much for newborn clothes. Maybe his brother will take on the role of “little brother” in more ways than one. I feel so very blessed to have a wonderful husband and our Teag (2) he’s truly the light of our life and to bring another life into our family and to give Teag a brother is so exciting. Sometimes I look around and think “pinch me” because I love my life. I’m so very grateful. Of course, no ones life is perfect, I don’t expect it to be, there is always hiccups and hurdles we face but I count my blessings. I can only have the highest hopes for 2012 to be another amazing year.

Ashley & Lucas | Lakeville, MN Wedding Photographer

Lucas and Ashley's wedding was my last of the year, bittersweet really, bitter because it will be so long before I shoot another wedding, sweet because it was a fairytale ending for me. This couple, this wedding was really an inspiration for me, I was very sick, very pregnant and still I felt this wedding and I hope you see that in my photos here. I'm not only chosen by clients but I chose them and I couldn't be happier with this entire year, probably my favorite year of photography for me thus far. I feel like I found my "place" and Ashley and Lucas are a perfect example of my target wedding clients, not only are they sweet and easy to be with but they put together a gorgeous wedding with details I really appreciated, family that was lovely to spend the day with and a wedding party that was so easy-going. a perfect wedding day for me.

The day was fabulous and even more so because my friend Krystal Muellenberg was there with me, I shoot better with Krystal, and it wouldn't have been the same without her. Two pregnant photographers taking the Minneapolis area by storm, I am truly blessed to be friends with such a talent. The perfect-sized wedding party

A nice lady at the park told us of a trail that went into the woods where the trees were still bright yellow...gorgeous.

I have to admit- I'm amazed this one turned out, one of my favorites ever.

So for a change of scenery we stopped at probably the most amazing field with the most amazing light I have ever witnessed.

These photos don't just "happen", this field, the perfect lighting/timing and amazing couple all come together to make great photos. I can't gush enough about this couple and location they chose.

The reception was at Brackett's Country Club, absolutley gorgeous, Ashley really inspired me with her details

Cookie bar + 2 pregnant photographers = bliss.

Best grooms speech ever, as in photographer holding camera in front of her face even if not taking photos good, yes, I am a pregnant blubber but this speech put me over the edge, it went something like this "My parents taught me about choices and today I couldn't be happier with my choice with Ashley, (turns to bride) Ashley, you are my everything, you are my whole life" it was breathtaking and I mean that.

Knadles: Congrats to you on your marriage, you do not need best of luck wishes from me, I seen the way you look at eachother, I just hope I did your day justice, thank you for being the very happy ending to my 2011 season. All the best.

GUSH!!! I don't even know where to start, I knew Chad and Emily before they got engaged, I was beyond thrilled when they contacted me to shoot their wedding and let me tell you I wasn't let down, they put on one of my most favorite weddings ever. Chad and Emily are an adorable couple with awesome family and friends to share their day with, everything was lovely and fun to just be there. It truly was the perfect day. Ahhh....perfect timing sun!

Are you ready for this reception decor? Emily totally made-over the fairgrounds building into a cozy, country atmosphere. The food was delicious, an old fashioned cook-out, a kids station with hot dogs, juice boxes and milk cartons, peanuts, all the pies of the season, ice cream! absolutely awesome dinner with no waiting, no head table, no speeches, no cake cutting- it was a free for all and everyone loved it!

Wedding tip: for a rocking party- hire a band, hire a band, hire a BAND! Emily and Chad hired The Cheap Shots and they totally ROCKED!!! Their was 200 people on the dance floor until they had to shut the place down. Best reception dance ever!

As my 2011 winds down and I reflect on another fabulous year of photography, I think how blessed I am that no one has forgotten my work. I keep getting returning and new wonderful clients and I feel I grow more each year. This journey is both exciting and fulfilling for me, learning how to run your own business isn’t easy. Learning where you want your business to go is scary and learning to stay true to yourself is difficult. So I am so blessed, happy, overjoyed, blissful and bursting at the seams with thankfulness for those who understand my business and hire me anyway. When you hire me as a photographer I am pretty clear as to what you should expect. When you hire me as a photographer please remember…

I’m a mom.
To a very curious and rambunctious 2 year old little boy who wants piggy back rides, to play baseball, swing, four-wheeler rides, to go to the park, to watch cartoons together, to read books together and wants all of my attention, all of the time, and he deserves it.

I’m a wife.
To an amazing and supportive husband who loves nice dinner dates and movies and watching the game together. He doesn’t require as much of my time but still he deserves it.

I’m an employee.
Outside of my photography business I have a full time (yep 40 hours per week) Job that I actually like (most of the time).

I’m a person.
With interests of my own, hobbies other than photography. I like to take vacations, go to the spa, read books, watch movies, go to concerts, dinners, hanging out with friends, shopping, decorating, etc.

I’m a to do list.
I have Dishes, laundry, dinner, bathrooms, doctor, dentist, bills just like you.

I’m an editor.
I edit photos every night after my son goes to sleep until I can’t keep my eyes open anymore. I do try to get clients their photos in a timely manner, however sometimes time gets away from me.

I’m pregnant.
I’m carrying the sweetest little boy in the world, and he’s growing more everyday.

I can’t thank you all enough for your patience and understanding with me. No one has ever complained about the time it takes to receive photos, as I got behind this fall I just want to say I appreciate that and I feel lucky to have very gracious and wonderful clients who understand my life and what it takes to balance it.

And now for photos….I didn’t mean to hijack Chelsea and Curts post but I wanted everyone to know the sacrifices I make to continue my photography passion. Chelsea and Curt are a prime example of why I love to take photos. They are fun, adorable and simply in love. Their session was on a cold night and I worried about the outcome but I love their session, the weather didn’t effect it at all and Chelsea and Curt were perfect. I am so thrilled they contacted me for their May 2012 wedding! I love their style and ideas already. Enjoy!

Abby & Danny Engaged

Before I leave for a much needed vacation, I know I just posted fall engagements but then I shot Abby & Danny's and just had to share, Krystal Muellenberg and I are shooting Abby & Danny's wedding together and we couldn't be more excited! it seems like every Sept/Oct I get very busy with sessions, I wonder why? is it because Fall is the BEST season ever? of course it is, it is absolutley gorgeous outside and the light in the late afternoon/early evening is amazing. But since I have been doing so much shooting, I have had very little editing time. I am doing a big blogpost mash up of my recent family sessions. My friend Jackie got married! I'm so happy for her and I am so happy to be a part of their (GORGEOUS) October Wedding Day. (Note to self, the second weekend is October has been insanely perfectly gorgeous weather the past 2 years). Jackie looked amazing, the wedding party was fun to work with, the weather is beautiful. It was a perfect day and well deserved. As I was edited a blog post I noticed I had a huge smile on my face, a smile of happiness for Jackie, and my reaction to the look on her face in these photos. Oh, Enchanted Barn, how I missed thee. I wondered what it would be like to go back, would I love it as much as I did the first time? will I be AS inspired? Absolutely. Every wedding is different in their own ways, different events of the day, different details, colors, food, itinerary, wedding party, different everything yet, at the same wonderful wedding venue. I'm so thrilled to share Tabitha & Michael's wedding with you. They really thought out their day and details, such as homemade wine and apple butter, special songs that meant something to them, a choreographed first dance, and best of all The Enchanted Barn provides this warm, relaxed and intimate atmosphere that I can't explain, maybe the photos will....

This was my very favorite, Tabitha's Great Grandparents old farm door she used for her escort cards...this cost almost nothing except imagination. I think I took 100 photos of it but decided I better just show this...

I adore these details, homemade wine and favors..I'll admit, pregnant and all I had to try a sip of the homemade wine, I was skeptical, I was wrong, it was INCREDIBLE and I am contacting The Hyer's to see if I can purchase a bottle...seriously.

I'm a mom, I'm a potential photography customer, I know what kind of pics I like but I'm also a photographer and know that perfect photos do not happen, especially with kids involved! This is why I love my clients so much,Michelle and Jason are really laid back as far as their session, they know I don't "set up" shots or try to do something that kids don't want to do, I have a 22 month old, believe me, when it comes to photos..there is no telling him what to do. So my advice, just go with it! Like our friends, The Derousseau's did, laugh about it, hope that some good candid moments were caught and have fun with it. The kids weren't really into pictures at this session, but that didn't stop us from getting some fun shots! And...they are SUPER cute kids!

I am so blessed to meet these wonderful clients and spend the biggest day of their lives with them, I get to travel with my family and stay at cool resorts. I LOVE Sheboygan. If anyone is getting married there contact me, I want to go back, what a great town, great locations, great shops and culture. It was amazing and so was Mr. & Mrs. Caspers wedding, Monika looked amazing, Greg is so sweet and their wedding party was fabulous. The weather was perfect for them and I couldn't have asked for a better second shooter Julie Stephenson to make the trip to Sheboygan to be there with me. As the year winds down and I only have 4 weddings to go, I am so glad I have 2011 wedding season to reflect back on, because it was wonderful.

Monika's dress was so classy, I loved it and she asked if we should get into it outdoors rather than the basement, YES. Definitley. Even if you get ready indoors and then come outside for photos of getting into the dress, it will be worth it. It's a no-brainer for getting ready photos when it comes to basements vs. outdoors.

Oh The Willers, how I love thee. Seriously Mark and Rachel are amazing people, genuinely thoughtful, sweet and absolutely wonderful. Their wedding was all of that and more. It was perfect. If I had to describe it in 3 words they would be romantic, lovely, perfect. one of my favorite things about Mark and Rachel's day is that it felt like a wedding. The weather was gorgeous, Rachel and Mark were more excited than nervous, and everything went so smoothly. I am so happy for them and so happy and honored to be at this wedding and so honored to be joined by my dear friend Krystal Muellenberg and Amanda Crowe Photography. As I said I am posting smaller posts for time reasons, yes..this is condensed since I took a bagillion photos. Check out Rachel's details, I think she should be an editor for Brides magazine, and for that allow me to highlight a few wedding pointers from Rachel.

On to the pictures, first The DRESS, The DRESS, The DRESS!!! Honestly one of if not my very favorite dress to photograph, it was different, it had movement, it looks incredible on Rachel.

Flowers ARE important. I'm not a big gardener or flower person but take it from me real, beautiful bouquet arrangement do make a difference. Rachel happened to pick one of my very favorite flowers the ranunculus.

I like to play with light (sun) sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, sometimes I get lucky.

Rachel and Mark understand what it takes to get great photos, time and cooperation, Rachel sat in her dress and it was FULL of grass, sticks and bugs....can you see them? I rest my case.

We traveled to a new location with a rustic old barn, it was breathtaking

The speeches were so heartfelt, Mark carried a matchbox car around so much as a child his dad said "you'll have that matchbox at your wedding"....sure enough.

The first photo is of the grandparents who won the "anniversary dance" I promised I would remember how many years but I doubt I am correct (57?) anyway I just know Rachel and Mark will be winning this dance in years to come.

Rachel and Mark's wedding is the reason I do weddings or any type of photography. They gave me butterflies and brought out that passion in photos I love so much. They need no direction in these photos, these are simply Rachel and Mark in love. Wonderful photos come from both photographer and subject.

My Cousin Greg and his wife Amanda asked me to shoot their wedding day, so with most friends/family weddings I did both, photographer and guest. I shot their ceremony in this gorgeous church in Fort Atkinson, WI. I loved loved this amazing church. Then we went outdoors for some fun wedding party & couple shots...

Mya Marie

My dear friends Steph and Travis welcomed baby Mya a couple weeks ago. I went to visit them and she is so perfect!! I love her. As you know I no longer offer newborn photos (read below for details) but I was visiting anyway and Steph has never asked me for photos before and said she really wanted me to do them, I couldn't let her down. We shot this session in their garage for great lighting, and it was warm like super ridiculously HOT so Mya was literally snoozing away the entire time making my life a breeze. I think she may have a modeling future ;)

The next few blog posts are a bit shorter than usual, I am behind and working hard on catching up. Sorry if you were hoping for more but just think of how fun it will be when you get the disc!! SURPRISE!

I LOVE these baby parts!

I no longer offer newborn photos for the simple reason that I am no good at them.The only artifical light you will ever see me use is a speedlite at a church or receptions, why? because I'm just not good at off camera lighting and I simply prefer natural light. Most baby sessions should be indoors, this is a hurdle for someone using natural light only which is why I shoot babies outdoors (like in Steph and Travis's garage) This time it worked great but in general babies sense me and they never sleep and always cry. If I can't give my best at something I will no longer offer those services. As for the BIG news, I am expected our second child! We are so excited, blessed and in love already. However this bundle has really taken a toll on me, a lot different than my pregnancy with Teag. I'm starting to come around now but had to take a break from photography for awhile, relax, enjoy the aches and pains of pregnancy and enjoy our last months with Teag as our only child. Sorry for the blog lullness, I hope to keep up better from now on. Although I am behind on blogging I'm not terribly behind on editing. I appreciate anyone who is waiting for photos patience and understanding. This is such an important time in our lives and I really want to focus on it. I also apologize to anyone I have turned away this year for sessions, and any sessions I cancelled. I hope I have referred you to the perfect photographer. I have full intentions of resuming photography as usual starting May 2012. I will be taking on even less sessions however, please check (LIKE) my Facebook page for updates and availability.

Travis & Andrea | WI Dells, WI Wedding Photography

One of the first things I noticed about Andrea was her outlook on a wedding. It was the exact same as mine. We share the same mind-set, wedding should be about the couple, you should have it look the way YOU (the bride or groom) want it to look. What I mean by that is Andrea (and I) have a strong standpoint and it's "I know what I want" Andrea knew the type dress she wanted, the flowers, centerpieces, photographers, vendors, venue, etc. In NO way do I mean bridezilla here, she was the exact opposite actually. The wedding was very laid back, they had a first look before the ceremony, no garder toss or bouquet toss, no stuffy traditions, It was all about Andrea and Travis and the closest people to them. I loved every minute of it.

I also loved the fact that Andrea opted to hire both Krystal Muellenberg and I as primary shooters,which means Krystal and I came up with a package to split, we shared the work of the day, formals, different points of view, different ideas, different lenses, different location ideas. One photographer can't be everywhere at once, and yes we hire second shooters to assist but the difference here is no one was in the background, the couple will get the full day of photos from EACH of us, Andrea will get a album with our combined photos. Although Krystal and I have similary styles and like the same things, we of course have different perspectives. We work well together and I am totally 100% spoiled now and want to shoot every wedding together! I knew Andrea was beautiful, as a bride with the hair, the dress, the smile, Andrea was stunning, and yes, those are raindrops, she is a stunning,rebel bride!

Andrea & Travis opted for a "first look" which Krystal and I welcomed. I'd like to use Travis as an example of why first looks are amazing.

For those of you with mixed feelings about the first look, Travis did get emotional and then he could hug and kiss his bride, they had a moment that you do not get at the alter. Grooms react better in fact when they are alone and we can get way better photos of the reaction than we can when they are standing at the end of the aisle

Jeremiah & Hannah | Richland Center, WI Wedding Photographer

Hannah & Jeremiah were married on July 9th, this post is quite late getting to the blog. I'm pretty behind right now so I thank them for their patience. The tardyness had nothing to do with their wedding, because it was absolutely fabulous. I had a 4 week photography vacation and this was my first wedding back since June 10th and I was excited to shoot it, and I knew Hannah had some killer details like the bridesmaids dresses and cowboy boots, her dress from the one and only Kleinfelds in New York was stunning and I wanted to steal her Kate Spade shoes! Everything was wonderful including Hannah's location ideas and even though they had a large wedding party, everyone was really cooperate and wonderful. Also had the pleasure of working with Tiffany Anderson of TLA photography who was able to second shoot with me at the last moment. Tiffany was great to work with and made the day even better, check out her blog post here. I hope this preview was worth the wait. On with the show...

I tried several dress shots but there was something about the upstairs at the Williams residence, the window light and cozy room created my favorite dress and shoe shot.

Hannah's dad is remarkable. He brought in the band from his own wedding to Hannah's mom Jane and sang a song to her called "Dance with my daughter". It was a total tear-jerker and the most incredible father speech I ever witnessed.

and now for the dance, if you ever need a good ice-breaker at your wedding dance, do what Hannah and Jeremiah did, have the DJ play a new upbeat song and demand your wedding party on the dance floor, make a circle and have them take turns showing their stuff in the middle, you will not regret it. The dance really took off!

We were undecided where to take these photos, we discussed back and forth and Ellie says " I want the Dani Stephenson experience" aka, fields, valleys, meadows, country, etc..that was refreshing to hear, as some of you see me using the same locations you may think its repetitive, but I call that my brand. People hire me for these types of photos, some people don't hire me because of these type of photos. Either way is OK, as long as my clients like my locations and ideas and I can do my thing.

Emily & Chad Country Engagement session | Tomah Wedding Photographer

I can't speak for all photographers but when I meet a couple at someone elses wedding or at a softball game, party, grocery store, wherever sometimes I think to myself, "oooh I hope that couple gets engaged some day and call me"...That couple for me is Chad and Emily. I was ecstatic to hear of their engagement and then over the moon when I got a message from Emily. Chad and Emily are my kind of people, sweet, funny, laid back and having my kind of small town country wedding. Can't wait to see it live this October.

And since they have waited SO very long for this post, I will cut the chatter and leave you with one of my all time favorite engagement sessions shot right in my back yard, very natural, very country,simple, just a beautiful couple in love, summertime, sun flare.....and an ice cold beer.

Jason and courtney were married a few weeks ago and I am sure they have been waiting for their preview. I took some time off from photography these past few weeks, I even stayed away from Facebook! One of the things I really strive for is connection with my clients, hopefully before any contracts are signed, etc. It's my goal be right for the client and the client be right for me. Sometimes we do not get to meet before the wedding because of distance, Alicia, Andy and I had a phone meeting and then we got to meet at their engagement session last week. I felt like we had that connection. It's really refreshing to know your clients, for me anyway, I feel I can give them more honest photos of themselves that way. I loved meeting these two. Summer and Fall updates:

Finally! Summer has decided to arrive after that crummy so called spring we had or lack thereof. I just wanted to send out an update on a few things coming up.

First, I am totally, 100% completely booked for 2011. All session times are taken, all mini-sessions are booked, all engagement sessions are booked….solid.

I will not be taking and Senior Portraits this year. Sadly, my fall is just too busy.

I will announce on my Facebook page when I open available times for 2012, please “like” my page for updates and recent work.

I have very few Wedding dates available for 2012. (Like 3! eee!) I have reduced my weddings to 2 a month maximum for next year and I am currently booked through September. If you’re newly engaged, be sure to seek out your photographer, I know my colleagues are booking up as well.

I am cleaning off my external hard drives and my Smugmug Gallery, if you want photos, now is the time (2008, 2009, 2010 clients)

You will see changes in the future: I am hoping to move my blog this year and lots of website updates (if I ever get at it) and Also, I am making changes to my contract and policies which includes pricing and my workflow.

My Son Teag is getting SO BIG! there are so many things I want to do with him, so many places we want to go, I won’t get these years back. I hope/intend to always have my photography business but I can assure you it will stay a small one. Next year, as I said, I will reduce my weddings and sessions a bit. Again please follow my Facebook page for updates. I will probably schedule a spring, summer and Fall mini-session date again and only rare full-sessions next year. If you want to get on the books, be sure to catch me very early in the year. I usually schedule my spring sessions in March. The last two years I was booked for the entire year by June, this year is no different.

"Do what you Love" Wedding Shoot

Krystal Muellenberg and I share a love of photography, we make time once a year to do a “personal project”, if you are a photographer, amateur, aspiring, professional, or hobbyist, it’s so very important to shoot for yourself. This year we chose to try a workshop on the business of photography it was so incredible to sit down and talk shop with other photographers, we all learned from each other and networking is so important. We followed up that project with our “Wedding Shoot” that we dreamt up over months of finding inspiration, contacting vendors, designing the layout of the day, getting ready area, ceremony, cake/treats/ dinner, right down to programs and invites…just like a real wedding only smaller. Our models were perfect, the day was perfect and all the vendors really came through for us. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome. We wanted to inspire other photographers, brides to be and ourselves. So I am going to go over the day, talk a little shop and of course pictures.

Megan is beautiful, it’s easy to see. She was the perfect model for our vision and was really the icing on the cake for the wedding shoot. Our "getting ready" area was outdoors, a beautiful vanity in the yard with natural light which is very important for getting ready photos.

Krystal and I wanted to talk about shooting a real wedding and what goes into it. Since it was a mock wedding we didn’t touch base as much as we would have liked, I think we were all entranced by Megan and Tylers adorableness. One of the subjects we did touch base on was manual shooting. If you do not know how to use your camera, grab a coffee and open up that manual you received with it or take a class, find a mentor. Do what works for you to get in control of your photos and not let your camera choose the settings. A big difference between professional photography and amateur photography is properly exposed photos. Here’s a series of mine SOOC (straight out of camera)

Black and White photos should have contrast, and not be boring and gray, there are as many variations of BW as there are color I think, here’s some examples:

And another TOTALLY different BW- which is your favorite?

Another topic was post processing, editing or color corrected whatever you choose to call it. Post processing should always start with a great photo, great exposure, great clarity, etc. You should never cover up or “fix” a bad photo in photoshop. Just tweak them a bit to enhance them. There are a lot of editing “no no’s” out there, I’ll let you be the judge but one thing I do know is never over-edit, don’t over use actions, overlays, presets, keep it simple because eventually all of those trendy edits will become old news and then so will your photos. A good resource to look at would be wedding magazines, blogs or guides, photography magazines or websites, do you see your editing style in/on these sites or publications? If not, perhaps that trend has come and gone. I love editing for my blog, I do not fence myself in as far as editing goes, everyone’s wedding is different, I love clean classic edits, I love a touch of vintage, I love creamy & dreamy, I love a little blown out sun flare, and I love bright colorful editing. But in the end I want my photos to have a classic and timeless look, even with a touch of editing.

A note to future DIY, rustic or vintage brides: You can have a small, simple wedding, you can rent vinatge pieces, furniture, dishes, accessories for your wedding day,You can have a simple, lovely wedding. Megan's entire wedding look was under $500, think of how affordable the entire wedding was!

I have a new found love for babys breath, not as a filler in a dozen roses kind, but in bunches so simple, so classic and beautful.

Tim & Kasey's Country Wedding | Tomah, Wisconsin

My May 2011 already had 2 weddings booked last year when Kasey contacted me. I had worked with this couple before and I knew I wanted to photograph their wedding day, Best decision ever. I think I could write a short novel about this couple and their wedding day and the people they shared it with, everyone was amazing! I just want to say Kasey and Tim put together an amazing wedding, it reminded me of my own wedding, which I treasure. Their wedding was genuine, real, rustic, classy, and natural, just like their personalities. There was nothing artificial about their day or their love.

A quick story: I once had a bride call me (Not Kasey) 3 days before her wedding and asked what we would do if the weather was bad? What if it rains all day? I basically said "the show must go on". We took the first half of photos in this blog in nearly pouring rain, my fabulous assistant/second shooter, Theresa Hanson held an umbrella over me as I shot. The entire wedding party was subjected to rain and wet hair, dresses and tuxes including the bride and groom before the ceremony. Can you tell? No, and that's my point. They now have these photos because they braved the rain to get them. We cannot control the weather on your special day, we must make the best of it.

Kasey and her bridesmaids got ready at The Bloom's Farm, her future in-laws. When I pulled up I immediatley seen this little building and new what to do with it.

Your "getting ready" area can change your photos for the better. Kasey took my advice and got ready in front of the window in the living room, it made all the difference.

Kasey & Tim's Dinner was held at one of my very favorite places on earth, Burr Oak Winery (I was married there a few years back) Their dinner was absolutley delicious and catered by Catering Cousins, Hustler, WI.

Heath & Krista Married| May 7, 2011

I think you can tell a lot about someone by the people who surround them. Krista and Heath are adored by their families and friends. All day people really went out of their way to make sure their day was perfect, including the groomsman's dad who let us use his beautiful home to get ready, TONS of amazing natural light, and this wall of windows, he got a ladder, pounded a nail and hung the dress all for Krista....

Heath's best man was his dad, very touching I thought.

Krista wrote Heath a letter, it was adroable.

The symbol of the ring holds so much meaning, Krista was given her grandmothers engagement ring the night before her wedding, it was handed down to her mom, Krista's older sister and then krista.

Krista danced with her dad to "Daddy's Hands" the song came out the year she was born and her dad would come home at night and cradle her to this song. Did I mention Krista was a surprise baby, she came 18 years after her sister!

Heath's dad's best man speech started out with "Heath and I go way back" the crowd roared, it was hilarious.

I can't wish Krista and Heath enough well wishes, but I know they will not need them, they are so deeply connected and have been dating since they were kids. Their love is unconditional and their support system is unbreakable. I am so honored to be a part of their day and see the beginning of the rest of their lives unfold. I love happy endings!

Spring Mini Sessions| WI Family Photographer

Spring Mini-sessions were supposed to be...well, SPRING! It was more like late fall mini sessions, When will spring arrive? Hopefully my summer mini sessions (JULY 30) will actually be warm. I was bundled up and ready for a day outdoors, luckily not on camera! My sessions on the other hand all looked absolutley perfect and braved the yucky weather and this is the result....

The Moseley Family went first, as always they looked amazing and they are so easy. This was the very first photo taken.

Up next The Schleusener Boys, they were tough cookies, out in shorts and T-shirts in the cold, but aren't their outfits awesome? well worth it I think!

Here's a little Easter gift to all you blog readers...Seriously the most precious post I have ever blogged. Cupid, the most perfect little lady ever. Her mom Callie (like any new mama) wanted "newborn pics"..ha ha...Callie is a friend of mine and my most fabulous hairdresser, I was over joyed that she asked and I couldn't WAIT to see Cupid in person. I do not do pet sessions for those who asked, this was a special session for Callies new baby girl.

One of the things I love best about engagement sessions is getting to meet my couples and getting to talk one on one about their wedding and get to know them before the timelines and groups of people surround them on their big day. Jeremiah and Hannah are a super chill couple, totally laid back, they have no specific expectations, very go with the flow couple (my fav kind) Hannah found her wedding dress at Kleinfeld's in New York and declined to be on Say Yes to the Dress....can you imagine? I love that about her.

Jeremiah is not all serious as he may look, he's really laid back and funny and I love how Hannah laughs at him. Love this

I love day after sessions, just me and the newlyweds roaming around for cool spots, even better this time it was warm and beautiful in Key West! Even though it started to rain and we cut it a bit short I absolutley LOVED this session, wedding...ENTIRE weekend!

I was fortunate enough to shoot Alison's wedding in Key West! Half vacation/ half wedding. It was amazing, beautiful weather, incredible people and one amazing couple whose hospitality made my family and I feel like one of their guests. Thank you both for that. As you know I took a lot of pictures, but I scaled it back and just wanted to focus on their day, so here's a small glimpse of an amazing wedding, Key West style!

I think my favorite aspect of the wedding was although it was a desination wedding, it wasn't at the beach, instead it was held at the unique and and beautiful Ernest Hemingway House

Isla at 6 months

On a blizzardy day, we were keeping warm in the "empty room studio" I have been using this winter, I love this room the light is so fresh and creamy looking! Isla is 6 months already so she came for a photoshoot, well prepared with adorable little outfits of course :) Her mom, Erin is really crafty and has opened a shop on one of my very favorite websites www.etsy.com check it out here. Rachael and Davey Linehan are a very real, very much in love couple who agreed to go with a vision I had. I knew they were the perfect couple and I couldn't be happier! One with the pictures!

I had been looking forward to this wedding for a while and it was nothing less than spectacular! Liz looked amazing, I loved that she did her own makeup and left her hair down. Liz & Josh were so laid back and easy going, it was really a pleasure being a part of their big day. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Mike & Tabitha are getting married in September at one of my very favorite venues The Enchanted Barn, I shot a wedding there last May and Lorin (the owner) is very kind. (If your getting married in Wisconsin I highly recommend checking this incredible venue). Tabitha filled me in on some of their plans and I am so excited, they have really thoughtful ideas, an intimate wedding party and...BURLAP!(pinch me) Crafty, rustic, intimate weddings are my very favorite! Last year I shot Mini-sessions for the Images for cure benefit and realized just how great they were...So I wanted to start offering these this year in place of full hour/price sessions. I will still book full sessions, please visit my new website for details and pricing at www.danistephenson.com . If you read my earlier post, I will be unable to take new clients at this time. The mini-session offer is for my returning clients only....(Love you guys!) Also my friend Krystal Muellenberg will be joining me!

I will be booking this Spring mini-sessions in March 2011- due to a lot of changes and cancellations last time, I think it's best to wait closer to April so no one jumps the gun.

Don't feel pressured! I fully intend on offering a summer mini-session date and also a fall mini-session date this year, if time allows.

More life and my love of pictures

Dear Blog readers:

Time for a personal post, I hope not to ramble too much. I just want to talk about my main goal for 2011, and break up my ramblings with some pictures.

My most important goal for 2011 is “more life”.
I read this somewhere and am openly stealing it

“This year I won’t let preserving other families memories supersede preserving my own".

I love photography, but I don’t want to have regrets later in life thinking I wish I had taken less clients and more time with the ones I love. When I started taking sessions I felt I had to say yes to everyone, my goal was to make every family happy but ended up making my own life chaos in the process. I have taken sessions on Sundays, holidays and even in the morning before work to get them all in. I have uprooted my own family and shuffled them about so I can make it to a session. I think the part of photography that maybe people don’t know or understand is the post processing, the session isn’t over after shooting, I have an average of 4 hours for each edited session, This doesn’t count weddings. Although I love what I was doing, I know I have to find a better balance and “more life”.

I have always been a photographer of some sort, starting way back when I was 10 and I made dresses out of sheets and made my cousins and sister pose in them while I snapped away on my Kodak 110 star, or in high school with my 1987 canon 650 slr 35mm (film is fun) for the yearbook staff, I slowly progressed to digital cameras, classes, practice, it’s been a long road. I can honestly say I took some pretty terrible pictures in my day; I over-edited them and saturated them until they looked like cartoons. After all those stages I feel I have found who I am as a photographer or close anyway. Photography is my passion, but now that I am a mom, I realize I have to make some changes, set some limits and take myself/my time more seriously.

So, in 2011, I will be focusing only on engagements, weddings and my beloved returning clients. Any new session inquiries will be referred to other area photographers.(There are plenty) This will give me “more life”. I will be offering mini-sessions throughout the year, to my returning clients, they are shorter, cheaper and so convenient, I highly recommend these!

You will notice a change in my pricing. My time away from my family is extremely important to me (as everyone’s is I am sure) I have changed my prices in hopes to book/ keep clients who are looking for/ have an appreciation for my work specifically and not looking at my pricing. I realize I will have fewer inquiries, but I have worked hard on defining my style and hope to generate clients that appreciate what I do without compromising.

Also I will only be shooting sessions in the Tomah area from now on. Unfortunately I do not have time to travel after work anymore.(yes, I work full time also) All sessions will take place in Tomah; I have plenty of locations to choose from if you’re not from the area. (This does not affect weddings.)

I met Ashley & Scott at a Starbucks and almost immediatley I felt a connection with them, they were funny, honest, genuine people in love. After they told me their engagement story and that they drove from one end of the state to the other to tell all their family and friends IN PERSON they were engaged, I knew I wanted to work with this couple.

100% genuine moment. I told them that "that's a wrap", Ashley turned to Scott and said "Thank you" and he kissed and hugged her and lifted her up..I admit I was a bit choked up by their sweetness.

Workshop and other ramblings....

Every year I set goals for myself in my home life and my photography. Last year my photography goals were to get on twitter, facebook, update policies, my contract, my workflow and attend a workshop just to name a few. I have accomplished all of these goals, bought a mac (MUCH BETTER),lightroom, new printer,new logo, new look,and website. I have much different goals for 2011, Stay tuned for lots of new information this winter.

Here's some shots from the Erin Johnson Photography workshop in MInneapolis, MN. I learned a lot about pricing and what I want to get out of photography, where I want it to go and more business matters that I needed some insight on. 12 hours of packed information then we got some shooting in but it was FREEZING outside so we used Erin's absolutley INCREDIBLE studio with great window light, I only can dream of such a studio!

Erin's studio was an old architectural building in the arts district (Drool)

this place was chuck full of insanely amazing artist, photographers, etsy shops, graphic artists and more!

so, I'm behind on blogging...really behind. The good news is the session is editing and being mailed, the bad news is the most INCREDIBLE family session had to wait nearly a month for a sneak peek. I always post new work on my FACEBOOK page, so be sure to be a fan and keep up on what I am doing. Also- THIS family session is like my "muse" this is what I love to do, The Genereaux Family needed little direction and interacted amazingly together. To get pictures like these, you must be comfortable in front of the camera with little to no expectations. That makes the best pictures. Enjoy just a few of an entire session of awesomeness.

It's amazing what you'll find on the side of the road

I'd just like to add that this dress wasn't nearly dirty, torn, or anything by then end, we all laughed because we didn't come near "trashing" it. My point here is Kasey did all of these things in her dress and didn't make it anymore dirty than if she hadn't. Yes, your dress was expensive but isn't that more the reason to get fabulous pictures in it? Kasey would have done all of these things on her wedding day but weddings have time lines, however she still sat, walked in alleys without holding her dress up, leaned up against walls and laid down on her wedding day. Please make the money for your dress worth it with pictures of it that last forever.

Each year I decide to take up to 5 seniors, I am always very busy in the fall so I can't take on more but I really enjoy shooting seniors so I always do a few. This year I snuck in 6, Niki, a Arcadia Senior, then my cousin Cody, coming up next week is Ryan and these 3 lovely ladies.

up first Lacy, Mauston Senior,she is so photogenic and had the coolest shoes ever!

Next, Torey Sparta Senior is GORGEOUS, I think she should be a model, she has 2 looks, a very bright beautiful smile and then that fierce dramatic look, I love BOTH!

Kassie, Mauston Senior, she is beautiful and sweet as can be, her mom Suzie was with for the session and I must say they're bond is inspiring. The foot shot is for grandma!

I didn't know what to expect of Ben & Lucie's wedding because I had only briefly talked to Ben about the logistics, although I knew Ben, I had never met or talked to Lucie before. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised, Lucie was sp welcoming and light hearted, her motto was/is "no big deal" and I loved that about her.

Had a lovely family session with another adorable family! These 4 kids were so well behaved, (I think more behaved than my one kid) I am really happy it worked out, the last session we tried it was like 30 below zero! I met Kelli and Brandon over a year ago, I was thrilled to accept their wedding, they were the perfect couple, actually voted cutest couple in high school! After their engagement session (which BTW was one of my favorites of all time)I couldn't wait for their big day to see it all unfold. It was perfect! Kelli and Brandon are so amazing and so in love it just comes naturally for them. Theresa Hanson assisted me and did an absolutely amazing job! As photographers we shoot for others, it's the job and we love it but once in awhile it's fun to shoot just for us (our turn!), so Krystal Muellenberg and I put our heads together and created a "Stylized Shoot" completley made up by us, props/location/wardrobe/accessories/and shots set up by us. Krystal is such a visionary! She really made this day possible with all of her creative ideas and props, and I have to give credit to my Husband Jason for being our chauffeur around the cranberry marsh. WHAT an incredible day! If I have said it once I have said it a thousand times, tall grass, open fields, meadows, hills, trails, (etc) make the best pictures! THIS is the reason I love famikly sessions! this family was great to photograph because they were at ease and went with my wacky ideas!

My Fav, this calls for a wall canvas

PHOTO TIP, whoever your photographer, trust their judgment, no ideas are bad ideas but when it comes to location THINK BIG, wide open spaces! If you live in town, your lovely backyard will work great but to avoid disappointment think about what you see, other houses? fences? parked cars? street signs? garbage cans? just a little FYI

I was so excited for Niki's senior session while up in Arcadia, WI. We camp there every year and so it was the perfect timing to get together with Niki and her fantastic family! Niki's mom had some amazing spots picked out for our session, Waumandee, WI is beautiful!! and as always I love to shoot sessions somewhere totally new!

one location was the old Waumandee Mill, it was a photographers dream and then add Niki's cutness was the cherry on top!

They had this great stream and all the girls were ready to get in! then Niki asked if she could sit down...YES PLEASE!

I am SO excited to blog this, my dearest friends Heidi and Justin are awaiting their new addition to the family, Olivia will be such a good big sister! We shot our session at The Wollershiem Winery a breathtakingly beautiful buildings and vineyards and they also happen to make my very favorite wine!

Heidi is a super model, I mean it was the hottest day of the year and she looks cool as a cucumber, isn't she beautiful (she is even more beautiful on the inside)

I had the pleasure of photographing Erin & Steve's rustic barn wedding at the Enchanted Barn in Hillsdale, WI. I adored this wedding, the barn, the dresses, the details, the whole feel of the day was laid back, warm and absolutley genuine.

I have to compliment the staff at the Enchanted Barn, they were setting up when I arrived and they transition the upstairs from ceremony site, then to dinner nad later to reception while the guests mingled outside on the patio, downstairs for cocktails or cake and coffee.

Erin was breathtaking, her hair, dress and shoes couldn't be more perfect

Erin's color scheme was pale yellow and pewter...my favorite
